A great app nobody finds is still an app nobody uses.
The Discovery Problem Every App Faces
There are millions of apps on the App Store and Google Play, and the majority of downloads still start with a store search. That makes app store optimization — ASO — the mobile equivalent of SEO: the discipline of ranking for the searches your future users actually type, and converting the people who land on your listing.
ASO gets treated as a launch-week task, done once and forgotten. In reality it’s an ongoing loop — keywords, creative assets, ratings, and conversion rate all feed the store algorithms continuously. Teams that revisit their listing quarterly consistently out-acquire teams that don’t, at zero marginal cost per install.
Keyword Research: Think Like a Searcher, Not a Founder
Users don’t search for your brand name — they search for the problem: “expense tracker,” “sleep sounds,” “invoice maker.” Build a keyword list from three sources: store autocomplete suggestions (type your core terms and record what the store offers), competitor listings (what terms appear in their titles and subtitles), and your own support tickets and reviews, where users describe the app in their own words.
Prioritize by relevance first, volume second, difficulty third. A mid-volume term you can realistically rank top-5 for beats a huge term where you’ll sit at position 40 forever. Long-tail phrases — “habit tracker with reminders” — convert better precisely because they’re specific.
Metadata: Where Each Keyword Belongs
The two stores weight fields differently. On the App Store, the title (30 characters) and subtitle (30 characters) carry the most ranking weight, plus a hidden 100-character keyword field — don’t repeat words across these fields, every character is inventory. On Google Play, the title (30 characters), short description (80 characters), and the long description all influence ranking, so your Play description should weave core terms in naturally several times.
The proven title pattern is brand plus category keyword: “Notio — Notes & To-Do Lists” ranks for the category terms while building the brand. Pure brand-name titles waste the store’s most powerful ranking field.
Screenshots and Video: Where Downloads Are Actually Won
Ranking gets you seen; creatives get you installed. Most visitors decide from the first two or three screenshots without reading a word of the description. Treat screenshots as a story: lead with your single strongest benefit as a bold caption over the UI, not a bare interface dump. Each subsequent screenshot answers the next logical question — what does it do, how does it feel, why trust it.
A short preview video lifts conversion for most categories, but the first three seconds must show the app doing its core job — no logo intros. And run experiments: Google Play’s store listing experiments and Apple’s product page optimization both let you A/B test icons, screenshots, and copy natively. A 15% conversion lift from a screenshot test compounds across every install source — the same discipline we apply across every mobile app development project we ship.
Ratings: The Multiplier on Everything Else
The difference between a 4.0 and a 4.6 rating changes both ranking and conversion — users filter by stars whether they realize it or not. The single highest-leverage tactic is asking for a review at the right moment: after a success event (task completed, level finished, report exported), never at first launch. Use the native in-app review prompts on both platforms, and respond to negative reviews publicly; a thoughtful developer response visibly changes how prospects read a bad review.
Watch for rating decay after problematic releases. Both stores weigh recent ratings more heavily, so a buggy update followed by a fast fix and a re-prompt campaign recovers faster than you’d expect.
Localization: The Cheapest Growth Most Apps Skip
Localizing your store listing — title, keywords, screenshots captions — into even three or four additional languages routinely unlocks markets where competition is a fraction of the English-language store. You don’t need to translate the app itself to start; a localized listing alone measurably lifts installs in those regions, and it tells you where full localization would pay off.
Getting Started
This week: pull your current keyword rankings, rewrite your title and subtitle around one core category term, and set up your first screenshot A/B test. ASO compounds — small quarterly improvements stack into a durable acquisition channel. If you want a team that builds apps with discoverability designed in from the start, that’s exactly how we approach every mobile project.
